As was the styling, and even the limited choreography, but that's just it it was limited. Stone and Gosling were certainly no Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire - I think Emma's 'pocketful of sunshine' singing scene in Easy A left more of a mark on me than this. Of course, they aren't known for their jazz hands or belting voices, and I think that's supposed to be part of the charm? But there are SO MANY incredible singers and dancers out there, who could have found their breakthrough role in La La Land, and lifted the dull storyline.
While both undoubtedly worked incredibly hard on their singing and dancing, I really don't think that they played the best part of their careers, despite what the award shows think. La La Land, however, is a culturally isolated film that feels like a rejoinder to this rejoinder, a celebration of moving through the present moment political, racial, representational. But (surprise!) I don't think they pulled it off, either. The buzz isn't solely around the film of course, the lead actors play a big part in the world's new obsession. But it's really not enough to be different this film needed to be spectacular in order to live up to its own overwhelming hype. I mean, that wouldn't matter so much if the dancing was spectacular, the singing breathtaking and the lines memorable. Is it just me, or does nothing much happen, like, at all in this film? We watched with anticipation as we waited for the story to begin. I took all of my friends, telling them that it just had to be amazing, with all the hype surrounding it. I went to see the film around Christmastime, thinking it would be magical, like when I would watch The Wizard of Oz as a kid. Sadly, for me, it fell flat - in more ways than one. Starring the genius Emma Stone and the dreamy Ryan Gosling, and Oscar-tipped way before its release date, it should have been the modern-day resurgence that musical fans were looking for. La La Land sounds like a musical lover's dream. When I found out it would be about jazz, and based in Hollywood, I was all for it. When I heard rumours that there was a modern-day musical being filmed, I'm not ashamed to admit I spent a good few days binge-watching Chicago, Singin' in the Rain and Annie in anticipation. 'Whiplash'winner of three Academy Awards, one Golden Globe, three BAFTAs, among otherswas the shrewd introit of a filmmaker who categorically intended to shake.
But I have a confession…I hated La La Land. 'La La Land' Is The Supreme Full-Length Feature Film of 2016 & The Most Sublime Musical Movie of The Last Two Centuries.
